An alleged conman who escaped from custody in Port Elizabeth two weeks ago before being rearrested in East London at the weekend, made yet another dramatic attempt to escape on Tuesday morning, crashing a police car in the process.

Mark Michaels, 30, who faces a string of fraud charges across the province, was apprehended by members of the East London public, after crashing a stolen police car in Devereux Avenue.

Cambridge police detectives were in the process of transporting Michaels to the magistrate's court there when he tried to flee.

Police spokesman Captain Mluleki Mbi confirmed the incident. He said he would release a statement soon.
