Lady Lea in town for birthday bash

POPULAR South African DJ Lea Moscou Barrett, better known as Lady Lea, will be hitting Balizza in Walmer on Sunday for her birthday bash celebrations.

“I will be bringing the best of my deep and funky house vibes,” she said.

Lea, 34, whose birthday is on April 21, said she loved playing in Port Elizabeth, one of her favourite places to spin the decks.

“The crowd is very musically educated and I don’t have to hold back when I play to them. They are very responsive and this is always rewarding.”

Lady Lea has been deejaying since she was just 14 and has been a music fan since childhood. “I always loved being in shows, whether it was performing as a drum majorette or in the choir, I love the stage and social gatherings.

“The first time I saw a DJ I was completely hooked,” she said.

Lady Lea has built a thriving career in the industry. She has deejayed for 20 years and released 16 compilation albums.

She has played at virtually every club of note in South Africa, and internationally as well. “I would still like to play in many more countries and release more of my own music,” she said.

One of her most memorable moments as a DJ was when she entertained a crowd of more than a million people at the German Love parade in 2007, an experience she described as “insane”.

“The feeling was indescribable – jaw-dropping, soul-gripping, just amazing,” she said.

At her birthday bash in the Bay this weekend she is hoping to see happy and energetic people. “I love making people feel happy – dance, live in the moment and have fun,” she said.

Lady Lea will deejay at Balizza from 8pm. Entry is R60, or R100 for VIP tickets.
